Ambitious plans to secure the future of Blackpool’s iconic heritage trams are continuing to progress, as preparations ramp up for a series of summer tours featuring the historic fleet.
Blackpool Transport has outlined a long-term vision that includes establishing a permanent home for the town’s vintage trams, alongside the return of regular seafront services aimed at boosting tourism and preserving the resort’s transport heritage.
The initiative is being driven by the company’s new Managing Director, Lea Harrison, who has identified the revitalisation of heritage operations as a key priority.
The plans follow confirmation that the existing Tramtown site—previously home to the heritage collection—has been deemed structurally unsafe and beyond repair following an independent engineering assessment. While the closure marks the end of an era, Harrison said it also presents an opportunity to create a more sustainable and modern attraction.
In the interim, Blackpool Transport is exploring temporary solutions, including ‘pop-up’ displays of vintage trams, while funding and proposals for a new permanent facility are developed. Further details on regular heritage tours along the seafront are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Activity is already underway, with several private and special tours scheduled throughout May. The well-known ‘Balloon’ tram (No. 717) is set to operate as part of a Fylde Tramway Society tour, while Bolton tram 66 will run during a visit from the Electric Railroaders Association from New York. Tram 717 will also return later in the month for a charity event supporting Dementia Action Week.
Harrison reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to safeguarding Blackpool’s tramway legacy, describing the fleet as a central part of the town’s identity.
“Blackpool is as famous for its historic trams as it is for its tower and the Pleasure Beach,” he said. “We are fully committed to preserving this heritage for future generations.”
Work is now ongoing with local authorities and stakeholders to develop detailed proposals, with further announcements expected as plans evolve.
