Innovate UK has announced two new funding competitions aimed at accelerating the development of aviation technologies that can be used across both civilian and defence applications.
The programmes, which open for applications in early May, reflect increasing government focus on strengthening the UK’s capabilities in areas such as autonomous systems, advanced air mobility and counter-drone technologies.
In total, up to £15 million will be made available across the two competitions.
The larger initiative, Dual-use aviation systems and autonomy, has a funding pot of up to £10 million. It will support the development of technologies related to uncrewed and autonomous aircraft, as well as systems that can be deployed in both commercial and military aviation environments.
A second competition, focused on counter-uncrewed aerial systems (counter-UAS), will provide up to £5 million in funding. This programme aims to encourage solutions capable of detecting, deterring or mitigating risks associated with the misuse of drones, particularly in relation to critical infrastructure protection and public safety.
Innovate UK is inviting applications from a wide range of organisations, including small and medium-sized enterprises, larger businesses, public sector bodies and collaborative partnerships across the UK.
Both competitions will open on 5 May 2026, with an online briefing session scheduled for 11 May. The deadline for submissions is 3 June 2026.
Further information, including eligibility criteria and application guidance, is available via Innovate UK’s official funding channels.
