Drivers on the M27 in Hampshire should prepare for continued disruption, as major resurfacing between junctions 5 and 7 enters its next phase.

The long-running project has already resulted in a 50mph speed restriction along this stretch, a limit that’s expected to stay in place well into 2026.

National Highways has announced that work will now shift focus to lanes one and two on the westbound side. Upgrades in this phase include the installation of a quieter road surface, technology enhancements, improved drainage, and additional safety features.

The resurfacing aims to replace the ageing concrete with a modern, low-noise alternative, which is expected to deliver a smoother and safer driving experience. A National Highways spokesperson explained that overnight closures will be necessary to carry out this work, allowing crews to operate safely during periods of lighter traffic.

“To continue delivering a quieter and more durable road surface on the M27 between junctions 5 and 7, we’re now preparing to overlay lanes one and two westbound,” the spokesperson said.

“This phase includes technology updates and overnight slip road closures, with diversions clearly marked.”

The project began earlier in the year and has already brought months of speed restrictions and lane closures. While the improvements are expected to enhance road durability and reduce noise for nearby communities, a firm end date for the scheme has yet to be confirmed. National Highways currently projects completion by spring 2026.

In the meantime, motorists are advised to plan ahead and remain alert to upcoming overnight slip road closures throughout the resurfacing zone.
