TfL Exploring Auracast Technology Trial on London Buses

Transport for London (TfL) is considering trialling Auracast Bluetooth technology on its bus network as part of ongoing efforts to improve accessibility for passengers.

Auracast enables a single audio source to connect to multiple devices simultaneously, allowing users with compatible hearing aids, headphones or earbuds to receive announcements directly—without the need for traditional Bluetooth pairing.

The technology has already been introduced in several major venues worldwide, including Frankfurt Airport, the Sydney Opera House and London’s National Theatre. In the UK, it has also been tested at Bristol Temple Meads station.

TfL confirmed it is in the early stages of planning a pilot on buses. Mark Evers, TfL’s lead for customer insight, strategy and experience, said the organisation is committed to making its services more inclusive and accessible for all users.

He explained that the proposed trial would allow onboard announcements to be transmitted directly to passengers’ personal devices, offering a clearer and more personalised experience—particularly for those with hearing impairments.

Findings from the trial will help TfL decide whether the technology could be rolled out more widely across the network, including on rail services. However, no timeline for the pilot has been confirmed.

The move follows similar developments in the rail sector. Govia Thameslink Railway recently confirmed it has installed Auracast technology at Brighton station in preparation for a public trial.

Other operators are taking different approaches. South Western Railway highlighted its existing accessibility measures, including QR code-based information systems, British Sign Language (BSL) translations, and induction loops across many stations.

Southeastern Railway, meanwhile, is not currently pursuing Auracast, instead focusing on enhancing its existing communication tools and expanding BSL provision. However, the operator is expected to review new technologies—including Auracast—as part of future fleet replacement plans.

TfL’s interest in the technology reflects a broader industry trend towards using digital solutions to improve passenger experience and accessibility, particularly for those who rely on assistive technologies.
