Bury New Road closed in both directions as underground ‘void’ found covering full width

A major route has been closed to traffic in both directions after an underground ‘void’ was found across its full width.
Bury New Road, near Clifton Road, close to the Rudy’s Pizza branch and the Railway and Naturalist pub, is closed off to all vehicles travelling in either direction.
United Utilities have been on site after after earlier issues were reported on Wednesday, April 30.
Bury Council have said that they have found an underground gap across the full carriageway.
Since last week, two-way traffic lights have been in operation as excavations and ground investigations took place.
The route is a major arterial road taking traffic to the M60 and Whitefieldand towards Manchester city centre
A spokesman for Bury Council, said: “Detailed investigation of the road has revealed a void across its full width.
“The road was fully closed earlier today for safety. “It must remain closed while United Utilities carry out further investigations.
“We are doing all we can to resolve this problem as soon as possible.”
The council added that diversion routes, including via Scholes Lane and Fairfax Road, are clearly signed and in place until further notice.
The authority, added: “Allow more time to travel “If you must travel, allow extra time for your journey.”
