National Highways has selected WSP to play a leading role in delivering its water quality strategy, aimed at reducing pollution from road run-off across the strategic road network.

Rainwater flowing from roads can carry contaminants such as oils, tyre particles and brake-related metals. As part of its Water Quality Plan, National Highways has committed to tackling its most significant sources of pollution by 2030.

Under the new agreement, WSP will act as technical partner, working alongside a team that includes Mott MacDonald, Ramboll, Arup and Aecom. The group will provide programme leadership, technical oversight and support for project delivery.

The work will focus on identifying and developing solutions for the highest-risk drainage outfalls on the network. Proposed interventions are expected to include both nature-based solutions, such as sustainable drainage systems, and engineered treatment methods, all designed to operate within existing highway boundaries.

WSP will collaborate closely with National Highways to help shape a long-term, evidence-driven approach to improving water quality. The aim is to ensure that interventions are targeted effectively, proportionate to risk, and aligned with broader environmental objectives.

The consultancy has already been involved in the programme as a technical partner since 2024, and this latest appointment builds on that ongoing relationship.

Stephen Elderkin, Director of Environmental Sustainability at National Highways, said the organisation remains committed to addressing pollution risks associated with road drainage. He highlighted the launch of a national programme to improve water quality and welcomed the continued partnership with WSP in delivering meaningful environmental improvements.
