Wrexham is set to receive a major boost to its active travel infrastructure with a new scheme designed to improve walking and cycling links between the city centre and Wrexham General railway station.
The project will establish an upgraded active travel route beginning at the pedestrianised section of Hope Street, near Waterstones, and continuing towards the station. Roadworks are scheduled to begin on 5 January 2026 and will be delivered in phases through to early summer.
The plans follow a public consultation held in summer 2023, during which residents, businesses and organisations were invited to contribute feedback. According to Wrexham Council, the final designs have since been updated to reflect comments received from the community and relevant public bodies.
As part of the scheme, the area will also benefit from new landscaping and street furniture, complementing the recent improvements made along High Street.
Public Drop-In Sessions Announced
To give residents and businesses an opportunity to view the updated proposals, the council will hold two public drop-in sessions at Tŷ Pawb (LL13 8BB) in December:
Tuesday 2 December, 9am–11am
Friday 12 December, 3.30pm–5.30pm
Council officers will be on hand to talk attendees through the plans and answer questions about the upcoming works.
Terry Evans, Wrexham Council’s lead member for environment, said the scheme would offer “real benefits” for anyone travelling on foot, by bike or using mobility aids.
“We’re delighted this scheme will come to fruition in 2026, as it promises to provide real benefits for people who want to walk, cycle and wheel their way between the train station and the city centre,” he said. “We’re here to answer your questions and listen to any concerns you might have, so please come and see us at one of the public drop-in sessions.”
