A woman has died after she was hit by a road sweeper in a West Yorkshire town, police have said.

Emergency crews were called to Commercial Street, Batley, at 09:55 BST to reports of a collision between a pedestrian and the vehicle.

The pedestrian, a woman in her 70s, died at the scene, West Yorkshire Police confirmed.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is being questioned by police.

The area has been cordoned off and a screen has been put up while an investigation takes place.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.

Det Sgt Nina Roper, of the force's major collision enquiry team, said: "A woman has sadly lost her life and an investigation is under way to establish the circumstances of what has taken place.

"We have spoken to a number of witnesses at the scene but would urge anyone else who has seen any part of this incident, or the events leading up to it, to please make contact."

She added: "Motorists who were in the area are also asked to check whether they have captured any relevant dashcam footage if they have one fitted."
