UK Power Networks has reported a significant step forward in its sustainability efforts, achieving platinum certification after diverting 99.4% of its recoverable waste away from landfill.
The certification, independently verified by Beyondly, reflects progress in reducing environmental impact and embedding circular economy practices across the organisation’s operations.
The assessment covered 131 sites and a wide range of waste streams, demonstrating how large infrastructure operators can reduce waste-related emissions at scale. A notable contribution came from streetworks activities—typically a major source of waste due to ongoing cable installation and maintenance—which recorded a recycling rate of 99.9%.
Excluding streetworks, the company still achieved a diversion rate of 96.7%, indicating consistent performance across other operational areas.
Reducing reliance on landfill is considered an important step in lowering methane emissions and limiting the loss of reusable materials, supporting wider decarbonisation objectives within the energy sector.
Mark Norman, head of environment and sustainability at UK Power Networks, described the certification as a key milestone, highlighting ongoing efforts to increase recycling and reuse across the business.
Chris Smith, lead consultant for resource efficiency and circularity at Beyondly, noted that the process involved close collaboration and identified opportunities to further engage with waste service providers and strengthen circular economy practices.
The achievement reflects the increasing importance of waste management and resource efficiency in the transition towards a more sustainable energy system.
