The decision on where to locate the new headquarters for Great British Railways (GBR) has moved a step closer, with the shortlist now narrowed down to two potential sites in Derby.

Derby was confirmed in 2023 as the home of GBR’s future headquarters, recognising the city’s long-standing role in the rail industry, from historic manufacturing to its continued involvement in rolling stock production and maintenance.

Two Sites Remain in Contention

The final decision will be made between:

  • Midland House – an existing building located directly opposite Derby station

  • Becketwell – a city centre brownfield site currently earmarked for redevelopment

Both locations are being carefully assessed before a final choice is made.

A New Era for Britain’s Railways

GBR will bring together the responsibilities of 17 separate organisations into a single body, overseeing the operation, maintenance and development of the national rail network.

During the current transition phase, the railway is being jointly managed by the Department for Transport Operator (DfTO)—which includes services brought back into public ownership—and Network Rail. Their existing headquarters is already based in Derby at John Ellis House.

Key Considerations Before Final Decision

Before selecting the final site, several factors will be evaluated, including:

  • Economic benefits and regeneration potential

  • Environmental impact

  • Social value for the local community

A final decision on the headquarters location is expected in 2026.

Strong Support for Derby

Rail Minister Lord Hendy said the shortlist marks an important milestone in establishing GBR, highlighting the opportunity to create skilled jobs in a city with deep rail expertise.

He noted that Derby’s heritage and talent pool make it well suited to host a national rail organisation, with the potential to drive innovation and growth across the Midlands and beyond.

Jeremy Westlake, Chief Executive of Network Rail, also welcomed the progress, describing Derby as an ideal base for GBR due to its strong industrial background and long-standing connection to the railway sector.

The new headquarters is expected to play a central role in shaping the future of Britain’s rail network while reinforcing Derby’s position at the heart of the industry.
