Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has spoken out after her car was severely damaged by a pothole, describing the incident as something experienced by “far too many people” across the UK.
The Cabinet minister’s Mini Cooper was left undriveable after hitting a large pothole on the B4437 near Burford in Oxfordshire while returning from an event last month. The vehicle had to be recovered by the AA following the impact.
Ms Alexander later made light of the situation, comparing the pothole to a lunar crater, but acknowledged the wider implications of the incident.
“I think that’s the experience of far too many people in the country at the moment,” she said, pointing to the growing problem of road deterioration.
A Widespread Issue
The incident comes amid increasing concern over the condition of Britain’s roads. The estimated backlog for repairs has reached £18.6 billion, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing local authorities.
Industry data suggests that just over half of local roads are currently considered to be in acceptable condition, with some routes only being resurfaced once every several decades.
Government Response
Ms Alexander said the experience reinforced her focus on improving road conditions, which has been a priority since she took on the role in November 2024.
The government has committed £27 billion towards transport infrastructure, with a portion aimed at addressing road maintenance.
In addition, councils have been warned they could lose up to a third of their pothole repair funding if they fail to demonstrate that money is being used effectively. Of the £1.6 billion allocated for local roads, around £525 million could be withheld from authorities that do not meet required standards.
The incident has added further attention to the ongoing debate around road maintenance and funding, as motorists across the country continue to face the impact of deteriorating road surfaces.
