Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) staff are set to step up strike action this week, Unite, the UK’s largest union, confirmed today.
More than 200 employees, covering roles such as ticketing, passenger support, and information services across the bus network, have turned down a 3.2% pay increase. With RPI inflation currently at 4.6%, the offer amounts to a real-terms pay cut.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham stated: “We cannot accept pay cuts disguised as increases, which is what TfGM is offering. These workers have our full backing in their campaign for fair pay.”
The dispute also involves disagreements over TfGM’s policies on standby duties, call-outs, and a four-day working week.
These lower-paid staff, seeking compensation that reflects the rising cost of living, previously carried out three days of strike action in late October. Alongside Unison members involved in the same dispute, they are scheduled to strike on 5 and 12 November, affecting bus and tram services across Manchester.
Unite regional industrial officer Samantha Marshall added: “TfGM is responsible for the disruption passengers will face. Our members are clear: action will continue until a fair pay offer is made.”
Further strikes may be announced if a resolution is not reached.
