The Transport Committee has opened an inquiry to assess the goals and potential impact of the Government’s newly published Road Safety Strategy, the first comprehensive plan in over a decade aimed at reducing fatalities and serious injuries on UK roads.

The strategy outlines the Government’s approach across four key areas: supporting road users, leveraging technology and data, improving infrastructure, and strengthening enforcement. It also includes a series of consultations to gather input from stakeholders.

The Committee will scrutinise whether the Government’s targets are ambitious enough and whether cross-departmental arrangements are sufficient to achieve them. Particular focus will be placed on measures for new and novice drivers, as well as safe driving practices for older road users.

Additional topics under review include speed limit management, rural road safety, road design, and lessons from international and domestic best practice.

Transport Committee Chair Ruth Cadbury said:*"Road deaths have plateaued in recent years after a period of steady decline, with far too many preventable fatalities and serious injuries. The Government’s new strategy is a welcome step, but we need to examine whether the right level of ambition is in place and whether arrangements across departments are robust enough to achieve it.

We will look at how to set learners on the right path, support older drivers’ safety while maintaining independence, and explore how speed limits, road design, and maintenance can further reduce incidents. Learning from both UK and international examples will also be vital. The inquiry will inform our recommendations to ensure the Road Safety Strategy delivers meaningful improvements for all road users."*

The inquiry is now calling for evidence from organisations, experts, and the public to help shape its findings.
