Nick Harris, chief executive of National Highways, has resigned from his post, reportedly following a breakdown in his relationship with the agency’s board over the handling of speed camera errors on the motorway network.

Harris announced his departure on Thursday, stating:"This is the right moment for me to hand over to new leadership who will guide the organisation into its next chapter."

The Sunday Times reports that sources suggest Harris was effectively pressured to step down after losing the confidence of board members. The tension appears to have centred on a flaw in the motorway speed cameras, revealed late last year, which led to some motorists being incorrectly recorded as speeding.

An internal investigation, led by a non-executive director from the Department for Transport, is expected to review governance and accountability at National Highways. The probe may result in censure for Harris and other executives involved in the incident.
