LNER Completes Landmark Digital Signalling Trial on the East Coast Main Line

Successful ETCS Level 2 testing marks a major step towards the UK's next generation digital railway, paving the way for improved reliability, capacity and passenger performance.


London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has successfully completed the first live operation of an Azuma train under European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 supervision on the East Coast Main Line, marking a significant milestone in the transformation of Britain's railway through digital signalling.


The overnight trial, carried out between 15 and 16 July, saw engineers, drivers and technical specialists operate an Azuma train between Welwyn Garden City and Hitchin, testing the performance of ETCS technology under real operating conditions at line speed.


The achievement represents years of collaborative work between LNER, Network Rail, Hitachi Rail, Agility Trainsand RailAdventure UK, forming part of the wider East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP).


Replacing Traditional Signals with Digital Technology

ETCS Level 2 is one of the most significant advances in railway signalling for decades.

Rather than relying on conventional lineside signals, the system provides continuous communication between trains and signalling infrastructure, delivering movement authorities and speed information directly to the driver's in-cab display.


By providing real-time operational data, the technology is expected to improve safety, reduce delays, increase network capacity and lower carbon emissions through more efficient train operation.


The latest testing also allowed operators to gain valuable practical experience of running trains under digital signalling on a live railway for the first time.


Major Milestone for the East Coast Digital Programme


Gary Page, European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Operations Interface Manager at LNER, described the successful trial as an important step towards widespread deployment of digital signalling.

He said:

"This is a hugely important milestone for LNER and for the wider East Coast Digital Programme. Successfully operating an Azuma train under test conditions under ETCS Level 2 supervision on the East Coast Main Line is the culmination of months of planning and collaboration across all the partners involved.
"The trial has provided valuable first-hand experience of operating with digital signalling in a live railway environment, providing important insights into how the technology performs.
"ETCS has the potential to transform the railway by improving safety, reliability and operational performance, and we are proud to be playing a leading role in its introduction."

Preparing Britain's Busiest Main Line for Digital Operation

The East Coast Main Line presents one of the UK's most complex signalling challenges, carrying a mix of high-speed passenger, regional, commuter and freight services operated by multiple train companies using different fleets.


Chris Hobden, Programme Director for the East Coast Digital Programme at Network Rail, said the latest milestone demonstrates continued progress towards introducing digital signalling across the route.


He said:

"This is a valuable step forward in getting the LNER Azuma trains and the other Hitachi long-distance fleets ready for digital signalling on the East Coast Main Line.
"With this testing we have now successfully used four different onboard systems on the Welwyn to Hitchin section.
"Migrating regular services to ETCS will be a gradual process which we begin this year and step up in 2027."

Industry Collaboration Driving Innovation

Hitachi Rail highlighted the project as an example of how close collaboration across the railway industry is accelerating technological innovation.


Mark Frost, East Coast Fleet Director at Hitachi Rail, said:

"LNER deserves huge credit for using the Azuma fleet to pioneer intercity digital signalling and drive innovation on the East Coast Main Line for the benefit of the entire rail industry.
"This successful testing milestone is an excellent example of the industry working together to deliver an integrated railway."

Agility Trains, which owns the Azuma fleet, also welcomed the successful testing.

Engineering Director Miguel Frade said:

"Today's milestone is a crucial step in enhancing the capability of all 65 of our Class 800 and Class 801 Azuma trains, which will ultimately deliver increased efficiency, capacity and safety across the route."

Laying the Foundations for the Railway of the Future

The East Coast Digital Programme is one of the UK's flagship rail modernisation schemes and will eventually replace traditional signalling over large sections of the East Coast Main Line.


As additional fleets become equipped with ETCS and further sections of railway are commissioned for digital operation, the technology is expected to deliver a more resilient railway capable of running trains more efficiently while improving safety and punctuality.


Although the transition will be introduced gradually over the coming years, the successful operation of an Azuma train under ETCS Level 2 supervision marks another important step towards creating a fully digital railway capable of meeting the demands of Britain's future rail network.
