Cutting edge kit is being used to keep Middlesbrough’s network of roads and gullies clear and safe.
A town-wide programme of gully cleaning and road sweeping is under way to improve local drainage, road safety and environmental cleanliness across the borough.
The approach will help to reduce surface water after rain, ensuring key routes remain clear and making travel easier.
All gullies will be cleaned to reduce silt build-up, helping to prevent flooding, protect infrastructure and support cleaner waterways.
Estate roads will be swept at least four times a year, reducing litter, debris and pollutants, while main routes will be swept at least six times a year, ensuring they remain clean and safe.
Welcoming the initiative, Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke said: “We’re fully committed to maintaining high standards of public infrastructure and environmental care.
“It’s part of an ambitious programme to tackle long-standing drainage issues, in turn making our streets safer, cleaner and more resilient during wet weather.
“By targeting key routes and using smart technology, we’re not only improving everyday travel for residents but also strengthening the town’s infrastructure for the future.”
The programme will cover every ward in the town using large and small truck-mounted sweepers and specialist gully cleaning equipment.
Routes have been carefully planned to ensure minimal disruption and maximum efficiency, with a technology-driven approach using specialist software to help teams respond quicker and work more efficiently.
Work currently under way includes:
Clearing silt from gullies, improving drainage and reducing surface water
Identifying and resolving standing water hotspots
A targeted cleaning programme, focusing on key routes including the A66 to create a clean and welcoming gateway into the town for both residents and visitors
Councillor Peter Gavigan, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Environment & Sustainability, added: “Thanks to this targeted investment, we’re making real progress in improving drainage across Middlesbrough.
“By clearing heavily silted gullies with the aid of the latest technology, we’re able to respond more quickly and effectively to areas that need attention.
“It’s a joined-up and proactive approach that is making our roads safer, cleaner and more welcoming, and that can only help to make Middlesbrough a town we can all be proud of.”
Residents are encouraged to support the programme by not parking vehicles over gullies where possible.
