TransPennine Express (TPE) is marking Mental Health Awareness Week with a series of free, movement-based activities designed to boost wellbeing and bring communities together.
Running from Monday 27 April to Sunday 3 May 2026, the initiative embraces the theme “Move for your Mind,”focusing on the positive impact that physical activity and social interaction can have on mental health. By encouraging people to get active—even in small ways—the programme aims to reduce stress, improve mood, and support overall wellbeing.
As part of the week’s events, TPE will host a dance session at Manchester Airport station on Tuesday 28 April at midday, followed by a lively Zumba class at Huddersfield station on Thursday 30 April, also at 12 pm. Both sessions are open to everyone, welcoming passengers, staff, and local residents alike.
This campaign reflects the train operator’s broader efforts to create a supportive and inclusive environment, not just for its employees but for the communities it serves. Encouraging regular movement is seen as a simple yet effective way to build healthier habits that benefit both mental and physical health over time.
Alongside public events, TPE continues to offer a wide range of internal wellbeing support. Employees have access to a 24/7 assistance programme that provides help with personal, financial, and practical challenges. A dedicated Mental Health Guide is also available, offering advice and directing staff to further support services. In addition, trained Mental Health First Aiders are on hand across the organisation to provide immediate guidance and connect colleagues with professional help when needed.
The company has also introduced creative initiatives such as Nya, a therapy dog who visits stations as part of the Pets as Therapy scheme, helping to ease stress and promote positive interaction. Meanwhile, “Move Ambassadors” within the workforce champion the benefits of staying active for mental wellbeing.
With its workforce growing from around 1,200 employees in 2018/19 to more than 1,900 in 2024/25, TransPennine Express has continued to expand its wellbeing programmes to support its increasing team.
Nicola Buckley, People Director at TPE, emphasised the importance of simple actions: looking after mental health doesn’t require drastic changes—it can start with something as straightforward as getting up and moving. She added that the events are designed to bring people together, challenge stigma, and make it easier for both staff and the public to talk openly about mental health and access support when they need it.
