Southampton to London Pipeline Upgrade Completed to Strengthen Fuel Supply and Support SAF Transition

A major upgrade to one of the UK’s key energy infrastructure routes has been completed, with the Southampton to London Pipeline (SLP) now fully operational.

The modernised pipeline is expected to enhance fuel supply to London’s major airports while supporting the aviation sector’s transition towards lower-carbon energy sources, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The project has focused on upgrading critical sections of the network to increase capacity and improve resilience across the fuel supply chain. By enabling greater volumes of fuel to be transported directly from the Fawley refinery to the capital, the scheme reduces reliance on road tanker deliveries—helping to ease congestion and cut associated emissions.

A key driver behind the upgrade is the growing demand for SAF. The enhanced pipeline provides a higher-capacity, more efficient route for transporting these fuels, supporting airlines in meeting both government and industry decarbonisation targets.

Joel Mizen, site manager at ExxonMobil Fawley, said the project demonstrated strong collaboration across delivery teams: “This has been a complex infrastructure programme delivered safely, on time and without incident. The result is increased jet fuel throughput and improved resilience within the UK’s energy network.”

The SLP plays a crucial role in supplying fuel to some of the world’s busiest airports, including Heathrow. As the aviation industry faces increasing pressure to reduce emissions, the ability to move larger volumes of cleaner fuels via pipeline infrastructure is seen as a significant step forward.

The upgrade also strengthens domestic energy security by reinforcing the UK’s fuel distribution network. As demand for both conventional and sustainable aviation fuels grows, the improved system is expected to provide a more reliable and lower-impact alternative to road-based logistics.

The completion of the project marks an important milestone in the ongoing modernisation of the UK’s energy infrastructure, supporting both operational efficiency and long-term decarbonisation goals.
