A multi-day enforcement campaign across South Yorkshire’s motorway network has identified more than 100 motorists committing traffic offences, highlighting ongoing safety concerns across all vehicle types.

The five-day operation utilised an unmarked HGV cab, allowing officers to gain an elevated view into vehicles. This approach enabled police to spot offences more effectively, with support from marked patrol units who carried out vehicle stops.

In total, 110 offences were recorded. These involved drivers of 41 heavy goods vehicles, 36 light commercial vehicles and 36 cars, demonstrating that non-compliance spans the wider road user base.

Key offences included:

  • 10 drivers using mobile phones while driving

  • 20 motorists failing to maintain proper control of their vehicle

  • 40 individuals not wearing seat belts

  • 4 cases of driving without due care and attention

Additional violations included speeding, ignoring red X lane closure signals, and stopping on the hard shoulder without valid reason.

Nathan Warrilow of South Yorkshire Police, who led the initiative, emphasised the value of the enforcement method: “The use of an unmarked HGV provides a unique vantage point, helping us identify unsafe behaviours that might otherwise go undetected.”

He added that while the operation included a number of heavy goods vehicles, the focus is on overall road safety rather than targeting specific sectors. “Vehicles carrying significant loads can pose serious risks in the event of a collision, which is why compliance is critical,” he said.

Warrilow also stressed the shared responsibility among road users: “Enforcement and education are key parts of improving safety, but drivers must recognise the consequences of their actions. Risky behaviour can lead to serious injury, loss of life, or prosecution.”

The operation forms part of wider efforts to improve compliance and reduce incidents across the strategic road network.
