Smart Solar Flood Warning System Enhances Safety in Little Paxton

A new solar-powered flood warning system is helping Cambridgeshire County Council improve both road safety and flood response on Mill Lane in Little Paxton.
The area has been prone to flooding in recent years, with rising water levels often leading to road closures and the deployment of flood gates to protect motorists and nearby residents. In response, the council sought a dependable system capable of providing clear, real-time updates to drivers about changing conditions.
SWARCO UK & Ireland has delivered a solution that combines three permanent LED warning signs with a solar-powered flood detection setup and a sensor fitted to the flood gates. The system is designed to respond automatically to conditions on site. When water levels begin to rise, drivers are first alerted with warning messages, which escalate to full road closure notices if levels become critical. If the flood gates are shut, the integrated sensor immediately activates road closure messages, which remain in place until the gates are reopened and the road has been inspected and cleared.
The technology is also connected to SWARCO’s MyCity platform, allowing the council’s traffic management team to monitor and control the system remotely in real time.
Councillor Robin Wyatt, Vice-Chair of the Highways and Transport Committee, said flooding continues to pose significant challenges for both road users and local communities. He explained that the new system provides timely and reliable information, enabling quicker decision-making and improving overall safety. He added that early warnings and more efficient road management will help the council respond more effectively to severe weather events.

He noted that solutions like this can be tailored to specific locations, helping local authorities strengthen resilience while remaining mindful of budget constraints.
