Schools across Shropshire are being invited to apply for grants of up to £1,000 to help encourage more pupils to walk, cycle or scoot to school.
Shropshire Council has secured a further £30,000 from Active Travel England for the third consecutive year, enabling local schools and colleges to access funding for projects that promote healthier and more sustainable journeys to and from school.
Applications for the latest round of funding are open until 22 May 2026.
Over the previous two years, more than £60,000 has been distributed to 56 schools and colleges across the county. The funding has supported a variety of initiatives, including the installation of bike and scooter storage facilities, cycle maintenance equipment, training programmes and the purchase of safety gear.
Some schools have also used the grants to create loan schemes, providing bikes and scooters for pupils who may not otherwise have access to them.
Councillor Rob Wilson, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport and economic growth, said active travel offers significant benefits for children’s health and wellbeing while also helping reduce traffic congestion around schools.
He welcomed the continuation of the programme following positive uptake in previous years and said the council was looking forward to seeing more innovative ideas introduced across the county.
The council said all schools in the Shropshire Council area have already received application forms, and its sustainable travel team is available to discuss project ideas before applications are submitted.
This year, funding will not cover the purchase of balance bikes, as these are already available through the separate Get Cycling programme, which provides schools with bikes, training and delivery support.
The scheme is only open to schools located within the Shropshire Council area.
Schools seeking further information or wishing to request an application form can contact the council’s sustainable travel planning team directly.
