Major safety improvements are planned for a stretch of the A30 in Cornwall between Kennards House and Five Lanes, with construction expected to begin in autumn 2026.
National Highways confirmed the scheme is intended to address the poor safety record along the route, particularly around Plusha Junction, where a number of serious and sometimes fatal collisions have occurred in recent years.
The road operator said the project will focus on reducing collision risks at junctions and improving driver visibility, following long-standing concerns raised by local residents and Cornwall Council representatives.
Local pressure for action
Calls for improvements intensified after several serious incidents at Plusha Junction prompted campaigners and councillors to push for a permanent safety solution.
As an interim measure, temporary turning restrictions and changes to the junction layout were introduced while a long-term plan was developed.
Although some campaigners previously suggested building a flyover to carry traffic across the A30, this option was ruled out due to its high cost.
Public consultation and revised proposals
More than 400 people responded to a public consultation on the proposed changes. The results showed strong support for action, with 93% of respondents agreeing that safety improvements were needed.
One proposal involved closing the junction at Two Bridges, but concerns were raised about the potential impact on residents in Lewannick. Following feedback, that element of the scheme has been dropped, though the junction will continue to be monitored.
Planned safety measures
National Highways said the improvement programme will include:
Junction and visibility upgrades
Partial gap closures to reduce risky crossing movements
Improved traffic signs, road markings and road studs
Enhanced roadside safety barriers
Measures to manage traffic diverted onto local roads
The organisation will also work with Cornwall Council to introduce local network improvements to mitigate any traffic impacts on surrounding communities.
Focus on safety rather than capacity
A spokesperson for National Highways said the scheme is focused entirely on reducing accidents rather than increasing road capacity.
“The A30 between Kennards House and Five Lanes suffers from a significant level of collisions, particularly at junctions,” the spokesperson said.
“We are carrying out surveys and investigations to identify opportunities to improve road safety along this route.”
Construction timeline
National Highways said it is currently completing surveys, planning work and coordination with local partners ahead of the main construction phase.
Work is expected to start in autumn 2026, with the temporary safety measures currently in place at Plusha Junctionremaining active until the permanent improvements are delivered.
Officials say further updates will be shared as the project progresses, with efforts being made to ensure the work is carried out safely and with minimal disruption to road users and local communities.
