Rush hour train left hanging off tracks after smashing into concrete blocks


A train has derailed during in Newcastle causing widespread disruption to the transport network during rush hour.


Dramatic images show the TransPennine Express hanging off the tracks after smashing into concrete blocks and railings outside a depot.


No commuters were on board the train when it derailed, with LNER confirming there were not any injuries.




But people across northern England and Scotland have been told to brace for ongoing disruptions today as engineers descend on the railway line.


Several trains due to leave London King Cross were cancelled this morning, with trains to Aberdeen and Edinburgh all starting from Newcastle.

A TransPennine Express spokesperson said: ‘There will be major disruption to our services between Newcastle, Liverpool and Edinburgh this morning, following a derailment during a routine depot move by one of our trains at Newcastle depot.


‘Thankfully, no-one was injured, and we are now working with our partners to get services up and running again as a soon as we can.

‘The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has been informed. Customers planning on travelling on affected routes are asked to avoid travel this morning and travel this afternoon instead.’

  • Newcastle – Hexham/Carlisle (Both directions)

  • Newcastle – Morpeth/Chathill (Both directions)

  • Newcastle – Middlesbrough (Both directions)

  • Newcastle – Darlington (Both directions)

  • Middlesbrough – Saltburn/Bishop Auckland (Both directions)
