Drivers using the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful will get a welcome break this summer, as Transport Scotland confirms traffic management measures will be lifted during the peak holiday season.

Current works on the route will be scaled back between April and the end of May, before being fully paused for three months. Traffic restrictions are set to return on 31 August.

The move is aimed at reducing disruption during one of the busiest times of year, allowing two-way free-flowing traffic through the route over the summer months.

Behind the scenes, significant progress has already been made. Contractors have completed stabilisation work on the lower slopes, replacing temporary protections with permanent solutions including ground anchors and mesh. Additional efforts have also focused on improving drainage—clearing slipped material and installing new channels to better manage water flow on the hillside.

Further drainage improvements are already planned, as teams continue to tackle the long-standing challenges at the site.

Details of the works, along with updates on other sections of the A83, are being shared with local community representatives and will be discussed at an upcoming Argyll and Bute Council meeting.

Overall, the temporary pause offers a balance between essential infrastructure work and keeping Scotland’s roads moving during the busy summer period.
