Railworkers commended for brave actions in preventing suicide attempt

Railworkers commended for brave actions in preventing almost certain death.

Three members of the Sisk rail team and another from Network Rail have been commended way they dealt with the situation, and prevented a tragedy occurring.

In a letter published on Social Media site, LinkedIn, Western route director David Davison, Western Route Director, thanks them for the professional way they dealt with the situation.

The incident in question happened last week when three members the Sisk Team, as well as a Network Rail employee, and an employee from our subcontractor Pro Rail Services, attended a site visit near Southall, West London. As the team assembled, the Project Manager noticed a distressed member of the public had gained access onto the tracks ( this is the mainline from Bristol into Paddington ) and then positioned himself on the Ironbridge Rail over Road bridge, threatening to jump, or run into the path of a passing train.

The COSS (Controller of Site Safety) immediately contacted the signaller, and got him to stop all trains. Meanwhile the Project Manager engaged with the very distressed man in an effort to coax him off the bridge and away from the tracks.

The Metropolitan Police were then called by a member of the public and they arrived a short while later.

After half an hour, the Project Manager managed to convince the man to leave the tracks and the bridge. He was taken to a waiting ambulance and then away to where he could get the help he needed. Sisk Rail, Network Rail and Pro Rail have further supported their staff with additional help to assist after such a traumatic incident. Speaking about the incident, Kevin Robinson also commended the individuals calmness under pressure and speed of thought which inevitably prevented a tragic incident, he said,

“Suicides across the transport network in the UK are an increasing problem and often it is our front line staff who are first on the scene.

“Over the year’s we have seen many stories of selfless bravery and speed of thought preventing almost certain death.

“This incident again is no exception; without the actions of these individuals we would most certainly have been looking at another fatality and another family who lost a loved one top suicide.”
