Wiltshire Council has provided an update on the ongoing upgrade works at the Longfield Gyratory in Trowbridge, confirming that significant progress has been made.
According to the council, the majority of resurfacing and road widening has now been completed. Improvements also include more durable road markings, wider lanes, and upgraded traffic signals. These enhancements are expected to boost junction capacity, encourage better lane use, and improve overall traffic movement. The new signal system will also respond more effectively to changing traffic conditions.
However, some disruption remains. The northbound stretch of County Way leading դեպի the gyratory will stay closed until 8 May while Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) carries out work to relocate a high-voltage cable. During this period, drivers cannot travel northbound from Bradley Road or Dursley Road.
The cable relocation began on 17 April, allowing SSEN to meet required notice periods for planned power interruptions. Once this phase is complete, final tasks—including lighting installation, signal adjustments, and surface finishing on County Way—will take place.
In preparation for the next stage, overnight closures are also planned on Bythesea Road between 5 and 8 May. These closures are necessary to ensure traffic can continue flowing in both directions once the works progress further.
Councillor Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways, acknowledged the inconvenience caused but stressed the importance of completing the work safely. He noted that the council has been working closely with SSEN to coordinate the cable relocation and ensure the project can move forward.
When finished, the improvements are expected to deliver lasting benefits for the area, including smoother traffic flow, modernised signals, and enhanced facilities for pedestrians and cyclists—particularly those travelling to the nearby leisure centre.
