Plans to Revive Manston Airport as Freight Hub Continue to Move Forward

The airport, which has been closed since 2014, has faced a long and complex journey involving planning hurdles, legal disputes and financial challenges. Despite these obstacles, the project remains active, with significant redevelopment work still required before the airport could reopen.

Manston has been owned since 2019 by RiverOak Strategic Partners (RSP), which purchased the former airfield with the intention of transforming it into a modern cargo-focused aviation facility. Current projections suggest that cargo operations could begin around 2029, once construction work and regulatory approvals have been completed.

Redevelopment Plans for the Site

The redevelopment programme will involve extensive work to modernise the airport’s infrastructure. Plans include resurfacing the runway, repairing deteriorating buildings and preparing the site to handle large-scale logistics operations.

Initially, the focus will be on creating a facility capable of supporting the increasing demand for air cargo capacity in the UK, particularly in the south-east of England where freight demand continues to grow.

Although freight operations are expected to form the foundation of the airport’s business model, developers believe that a successful cargo hub could eventually open the door for passenger flights to return in the future.

While interest has reportedly been shown by several airlines—including both established European carriers and low-cost operators—no formal agreements for commercial passenger services have yet been confirmed.

Strategic Role for UK Freight

Supporters of the project argue that reopening Manston would help address growing pressure on aviation infrastructure in the region. Airports around London are already heavily used, and additional capacity for cargo operations could ease congestion while improving supply chain efficiency.

Manston’s location is seen as one of its key advantages. Situated close to major road networks and Channel ports, the airport could provide an important gateway for import and export traffic moving between the UK and Europe.

Local Economic Impact

Campaign groups advocating for the airport’s revival, including the Save Manston Airport Association, say reopening the site could bring significant economic benefits to the local area.

They point to the potential for job creation, private investment and wider economic growth as reasons why the project could have a positive impact on communities in east Kent.

Challenges Still Ahead

Despite progress, several challenges remain before the airport can reopen. Rising construction costs and the scale of the redevelopment have required additional funding discussions with potential investors, while the planning and regulatory processes remain ongoing.

One of the key steps currently underway is a public consultation on proposed airspace changes, which will help shape the airport’s future flight paths. This process is necessary before the plans can move forward for approval by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

With significant infrastructure work and regulatory approvals still to be completed, reopening Manston Airport remains a long-term project. However, supporters believe the development could eventually play an important role in strengthening the UK’s aviation and logistics network.
