A major new £100 million link road connecting the A1 to the A46 near Newark has officially opened, marking the completion of a project aimed at easing congestion and unlocking future development.
The Newark Southern Link Road, also known as Middlebeck Way, stretches for around three miles (4.8km) and has been under construction for nearly three years. The route runs through a wider 700-acre development area, forming a key part of plans for a new 3,150-home community.
Boosting connectivity and growth
The new road is designed to improve journey times, reduce traffic pressure, and strengthen transport links around Newark. It also plays a crucial role in enabling housing and employment growth in the area.
Alongside its transport benefits, the scheme incorporates footpaths, drainage ponds and environmental features, aimed at supporting biodiversity and sustainable water management.
Funded through partnership
The project has been delivered through a mix of public and private investment. Developer Urban&Civic contributed around £65 million, with a further £20 million from central government, alongside additional funding from local authorities and partners.
Project leaders have highlighted the scheme as a strong example of collaborative delivery, bringing together developers, councils and National Highways.
Delivered ahead of schedule
Local leaders say the road has been completed ahead of schedule and within budget, providing a timely boost for the region.
The opening is expected to bring immediate benefits for drivers while laying the groundwork for long-term development—helping Newark grow while keeping traffic moving more smoothly.
