New Ultra-Rapid EV Charging Hubs Open at Key UK Locations

Two new ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging hubs have been launched in the UK, as operators continue to expand infrastructure along major transport routes.

Gridserve has opened a new Electric Super Hub at Roadchef’s Folkestone M20 Services, while Osprey Charging has brought a separate facility into operation at Twyford Services near Evesham.

The Gridserve site, located close to the M20 and routes դեպի the Channel Tunnel, features 12 charging bays capable of delivering up to 360kW. This level of power enables some of the latest EVs to gain approximately 100 miles of range in under 10 minutes. The hub operates using net zero energy and offers a simplified payment system via contactless “plug in and pay”.

Looking ahead, Gridserve plans to expand its network further, with a total of 96 high-power chargers expected across several busy locations by late 2026. These include sites such as Beaconsfield, Baldock, Cambridge, Cobham, Cullompton, Leeds Skelton Lake and Peterborough.

Meanwhile, Osprey Charging’s new hub at Twyford Services provides 16 ultra-rapid chargers, each capable of delivering up to 300kW. Depending on the vehicle, this typically allows drivers to add around 100 miles of range within 15 to 20 minutes. The site is strategically located near the A46 and A44 in an area previously identified as lacking sufficient rapid charging provision on the Strategic Road Network.

Industry leaders have highlighted the importance of such developments in supporting the transition to electric mobility. Gridserve CEO Daniel Kunkel noted the Folkestone hub’s role as a key charging point for both UK drivers heading to Europe and those arriving via the Channel Tunnel.

Osprey Charging CEO Ian Johnston emphasised the need for reliable, high-capacity infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas. He added that the Twyford site has been designed with future demand in mind, offering increased capacity and updated technology.

Roadchef also underlined the strategic importance of the Folkestone location, describing it as a major gateway for both domestic and international travel, where access to dependable charging is increasingly essential.

As competition grows within the EV charging sector, operators are focusing on improving the overall user experience. Faster charging speeds, increased availability of bays and well-equipped service areas are seen as key factors in encouraging wider adoption of electric vehicles and supporting long-distance travel across the UK.
