Aureos, working in joint venture with Taylor Woodrow, has been awarded the contract to deliver the HS2 Washwood Heath Depot and Network Integrated Control Centre (NICC) — one of the most strategically important operational facilities on the entire high-speed rail network.

The landmark scheme will play a critical role in supporting the future operation, maintenance and management of HS2 services, forming a central part of the railway’s long-term infrastructure and operational backbone.

Located in Birmingham, the Washwood Heath site will become the primary maintenance depot for HS2’s rolling stock fleet while also housing the NICC, the central hub responsible for monitoring and controlling the high-speed network.

A Key Operational Hub for HS2

The Washwood Heath Depot is expected to become one of the most technically advanced rail maintenance facilities in the UK, supporting the inspection, servicing and operational readiness of HS2 trains once passenger services begin.

Alongside the depot, the NICC will oversee real-time railway operations, including network management, service coordination, operational communications and incident response across the HS2 system.

Together, the two facilities will form a vital operational centrepiece for the new railway, helping ensure the safe, reliable and efficient running of high-speed services between London, Birmingham and future northern destinations.

Industry observers have long viewed the Washwood Heath scheme as one of the most critical elements of the wider HS2 programme due to its importance to the railway’s long-term operational resilience.

Joint Venture Delivery

The award represents a major achievement for Aureos and its joint venture partner Taylor Woodrow, both of whom will now move into the next phase of project delivery in collaboration with HS2 Ltd, supply chain partners and local stakeholders.

The JV says the scheme will focus not only on delivering complex infrastructure but also on creating long-term regional benefits through employment, skills development and economic regeneration.

The project is expected to generate substantial opportunities for local businesses, SMEs and specialist suppliers throughout the delivery phase, while also supporting apprenticeship programmes, workforce training and future engineering skills development.

Economic and Community Impact

Beyond its operational importance to HS2, the Washwood Heath development is also expected to contribute to the wider regeneration of the surrounding Birmingham area.

Large-scale infrastructure projects of this nature typically act as catalysts for investment, supply chain growth and long-term economic activity, particularly in sectors linked to engineering, manufacturing, logistics and construction.

The project team says community engagement and collaboration with regional businesses will form an important part of the delivery strategy as works progress.

Recognition for Pre-Construction Teams

The contract award also reflects the significant effort undertaken during the pre-construction and bid stages, with teams across both organisations contributing to the successful outcome.

According to the joint venture, months of planning, technical development and collaborative working were required to secure the project, with the achievement highlighting the professionalism and commitment shown throughout the tender process.

For Aureos and Taylor Woodrow, the Washwood Heath Depot and NICC scheme represents not only a major infrastructure contract, but also an opportunity to help shape a key part of the UK’s future transport network.
