McCann has successfully retained its role as street lighting contractor for the London Borough of Hillingdon, following the award of a new term service contract valued at up to £18 million.
Having originally been appointed in 2016, the company will now continue its work under a new agreement lasting seven years, with the possibility of extending the contract to a total of 12 years.
The contract covers the upkeep of around 25,000 lighting-related assets across the borough. This includes more than 5,000 illuminated items such as signs, bollards and traffic islands, over 4,000 non-illuminated signs and reflective or solar-powered bollards, as well as approximately 240 feeder pillars.
Under the agreement, McCann will deliver a comprehensive street lighting service, encompassing both scheduled and emergency works. This includes capital projects such as replacing lighting columns, carrying out structural testing, and repainting, alongside day-to-day maintenance of lighting systems, traffic signage and associated street furniture.
The scope of work also includes regular inspections, cleaning, testing, and repairs, as well as managing fault reports, conducting night-time patrols, and providing a round-the-clock emergency response. Additional duties involve cyclical electrical testing and supporting wider highways-related activities, all delivered in line with safety standards and council requirements.
James McDaid, Head of Local Authority Business at McCann, said the contract renewal reflects the company’s strong performance over the past decade. He highlighted the firm’s focus on customer service, value for money, and delivering social benefits as key factors in securing the new agreement.
Councillor Steve Tuckwell, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, Housing and Growth, welcomed the continued partnership, noting that McCann has consistently delivered services aligned with the council’s priorities, particularly its commitment to putting residents first.
