Marlborough Highways has been awarded a £150 million highways maintenance contract by West Berkshire Council, securing responsibility for maintaining and improving the authority's road network over the next seven years.

The new Highways Term Maintenance Contract will begin on 1 October 2026, with an initial duration of seven years and the option to extend the agreement for a further three years.

Under the contract, Marlborough Highways will deliver a comprehensive programme of highway maintenance and improvement services aimed at keeping West Berkshire's roads, footways and transport infrastructure safe, reliable and resilient for residents, businesses and visitors.

Broad range of highway services

The agreement covers both planned and reactive maintenance activities, alongside winter service operations, street lighting maintenance and highway safety improvements.

Marlborough will also deliver capital improvement schemes, support active travel initiatives and work with the council on highways asset management, helping to maintain and enhance the long-term condition of the network.

The award further expands the company's portfolio across southern England and reinforces its position within the local authority highways sector.

Focus on social value and local communities

Alongside operational delivery, the contract places significant emphasis on social value, with Marlborough committing to create employment opportunities, apprenticeships and skills development programmes throughout West Berkshire.

The company will also support schools through STEM engagement activities while encouraging staff volunteering and community partnerships across the county.

Sustainability at the heart of delivery

Environmental performance will form a key element of the new partnership.

Marlborough has committed to delivering a carbon-neutral service from the first day of the contract, while working with the council to reduce emissions, improve resource efficiency, minimise waste and enhance biodiversity wherever possible.

The company also plans to introduce lower-carbon construction materials and more sustainable working practices to support West Berkshire Council's wider environmental objectives.

Continued business growth

The latest award follows a series of recent contract successes for Marlborough Highways, including securing work with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and extending long-standing highways partnerships with Southend-on-Sea City Council, the London Borough of Newham, and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

Together, these appointments continue the company's expansion across London and the Home Counties.

Joseph Revell, Director of Marlborough Highways, said the contract represented an important milestone for the business.

"We are incredibly proud to begin this new partnership with West Berkshire Council. This is a significant contract for Marlborough Highways and reflects the trust placed in our people, our processes and the consistently high standard of our work.
"West Berkshire has an important and diverse highway network, and we are excited to bring our expertise, energy and spirit to the area. Our focus will be on delivering a safe, reliable and high-quality service for residents, while creating meaningful local opportunities and supporting the Council's long-term priorities.
"This award is also an important milestone in Marlborough's continued growth. We look forward to building strong relationships across West Berkshire and demonstrating our values through the way we deliver every day."

West Berkshire Council said the new contract is designed to provide long-term value while improving the quality and resilience of the county's highway network.

Councillor Stuart Gourley, Executive Member for Environment and Highways, said:

"This is an important step in securing a high-quality highways service for West Berkshire over the next decade. Residents want roads that are well maintained, safe to use and repaired quickly, and this contract is designed to deliver exactly that.
"We are particularly pleased with the strong focus on value for money, innovation and the benefits for our local communities, including support for local businesses and job opportunities. We're also committed to reducing our environmental impact, and this contract will play a key role in helping us meet our climate ambitions."

The appointment strengthens Marlborough Highways' position in the local authority maintenance market while providing West Berkshire Council with a long-term delivery partner focused on infrastructure resilience, sustainability and community benefit.
