M6 junction closed for three days for bridge demolition as part of £78m upgrade

Parts of the M6 are set to be closed following major upgrades to the motorway as part of a multi million pound project.

Part of the upgrades include the demolition of a motorway bridge in place of a new larger one. The wider structure will tackle traffic congestion on the M6 according to National Highways.

Junction 10 will be affected as the south bridge- which is around 50 years old - is to be removed over the weekend of May 6 to May 9. The north bridge is expected to be demolished a few weeks later.

To minimise the impact of the work on road users and local communities, two new bridges, which will each carry four lanes of traffic, have been constructed next to the existing bridges. Both carriageways of the motorway will be closed while the structure is removed, BirminghamLive reports.

Drivers are being alerted to an 'up and over' diversion for traffic which will leave the motorway at junction 10, travel over the roundabout and then re-join the M6 on the other side. The closures will take place from 8pm on Friday May 6 until 6am on Monday May 9.

Demolition of the north bridge is due to take place later in the month and will also involve a full weekend closure. National Highways and Walsall Council, supported by the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership, have joined forces to fund the £78 million upgrade of the junction.

Contractor John Sisk & Son is carrying out the work. A number of overnight closures are taking place over the next two weeks at the junction to enable resurfacing work to take place.
