Motorists using the M27 between Junctions 5 and 7 are nearing the end of a long-running resurfacing programme, with National Highways confirming the scheme is now entering its concluding phase.

After months of traffic cones, contraflow systems and 50mph speed limits, crews are close to removing crossover points and reinstating permanent white road markings along the route.

For commuters, the milestone signals progress following years of disruption. The motorway has been subject to extended traffic management since smart motorway upgrade works began in January 2019.

Overnight Closures Scheduled

To complete the remaining works, several overnight westbound closures will be required to give contractors full access to the carriageway. Closures will operate from 9pm to 6am on the following dates:

  • 23 February: Junction 7 to Junction 4

  • 25 February: Junction 9 to Junction 8

  • 26 February: Junction 8 to Junction 5

Signed diversion routes will be in place. National Highways has warned that the schedule may change in the event of poor weather or other unforeseen issues.

Testing Phase to Follow

From 27 February, the scheme will move into Phase 5, focusing on testing and recommissioning motorway systems and technology.

During this stage:

  • Narrow lanes and width restrictions will be removed

  • Lane 1 will remain closed in both directions

  • The temporary 50mph speed limit will stay in place

Much of the technical testing will be carried out remotely, meaning visible on-site activity is expected to be limited.

The full resurfacing programme is expected to conclude in the spring.

Further Works at Junction 7

Separate improvement works are also planned at Junction 7, where safety barriers on the westbound entry slip road will be upgraded.

Lane 2 of the slip road will close during the daytime, with full overnight closures scheduled between 26 February and 13 March. Temporary road markings and signage will guide traffic around the roundabout.

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for journeys during peak periods as delays remain possible while the final works are completed.
