M1 Drainage Issue Remains Unresolved Eight Weeks After Initial Closures

Repairs to a damaged drainage system on the M1 in Bedfordshire have yet to be completed, more than eight weeks after the issue first emerged.
Lane restrictions were initially introduced on 27 January on the southbound carriageway between junction 12 (Toddington) and junction 13 (Brogborough). The measures were put in place to allow tankers to remove standing water caused by the fault.
National Highways confirmed that the closures were lifted early last week due to improved weather conditions. However, no clear timeline has been provided for when permanent repairs to the drainage system will take place.
The organisation also noted that the problem had affected the stability of concrete barrier supports in the area.
Transport commentator Chris Ames suggested that the temporary reopening may be linked to drier conditions but warned that meaningful repair work would likely require further lane closures to ensure a safe working environment.
A spokesperson for National Highways said the situation continues to be monitored, adding that efforts to address the drainage issue are ongoing.
