The open-access rail operator are due to start running new London-Scotland services which will call at Preston

A new headquarters for rail operator Lumo has officially opened in Preston, marking a key milestone ahead of the launch of its services between London Euston and Stirling.

The open-access operator plans to run trains via Preston, offering a lower-cost alternative to existing services provided by Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express on the same route.

The launch of the new base on Fox Street, located within the Premier Inn complex, was celebrated with a vibrant parade led by Preston Caribbean Carnival. The procession travelled from the city’s railway station to the new offices, adding a festive atmosphere to the opening event.

Lumo has confirmed that around 100 jobs will be based in Preston as part of the new operation, providing a boost to local employment and skills development.

New Trains and Services

The service will utilise newly refurbished Class 222 trains, featuring a distinctive blue exterior and upgraded interiors designed to enhance passenger comfort.

Strong Local Support

Preston MP Sir Mark Hendrick attended the opening and welcomed the investment, highlighting the benefits for both passengers and the wider economy.

He said the new headquarters would bring employment opportunities, apprenticeships and more affordable travel options, while also strengthening connectivity between London, the North West and Scotland.

Sir Mark added that Preston’s role as a central hub on the route could have a positive impact on the local economy, attracting further business investment and supporting growth in the rail sector.

Investment in the City

Stuart Jones, Managing Director of First Rail Open Access, said the company was pleased to be establishing a base in Preston.

“We’re excited to invest in a new location that creates jobs and supports the local economy,” he said. “We’re already building strong partnerships in the community and look forward to launching our new services, offering straightforward, low-cost travel between Scotland, the North West and London.”

The event was attended by more than 50 guests and included live performances, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

Preston City Council leader Matthew Brown also welcomed the development, describing it as a significant investment in the city.

He said the arrival of Lumo demonstrates Preston’s growing economic strength and reinforces its position as an important hub within the UK rail network.

The new headquarters is expected to play a key role in supporting Lumo’s upcoming operations, with services set to begin in the coming months.
