A new generation of high-tech speed cameras is set to be introduced across London, using advanced radar and imaging technology to improve enforcement and road safety.

Unlike traditional cameras, the new units do not rely on road sensors or visible flashes. Instead, they use 4D radar combined with 4K imaging, enabling them to detect speeding vehicles more accurately and capture clearer evidence of offences.

Wider coverage and improved accuracy

The upgraded cameras can monitor up to five lanes of traffic in both directions simultaneously, a significant increase on older systems which typically cover fewer lanes and only one direction.

Transport for London (TfL) says the new technology will provide more reliable data and stronger evidence for enforcement.

Rollout across London

The cameras will be installed at up to 10 locations in the coming weeks, including:

  • Haringey

  • Tower Hamlets

  • Havering

  • Croydon

  • Hammersmith & Fulham

  • Brent

  • Hackney

  • Ealing

  • Sutton

All sites have been selected based on risk and suitability, with installations focused on 20mph and 30mph roads.

Part of wider safety strategy

The rollout forms part of London’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on the road network.

TfL says speeding was a factor in around half of fatal collisions in 2024, while national data shows more than 2.5 million speeding offences were recorded across England and Wales last year.

Broader use of enforcement technology

Alongside the new cameras, TfL and the Metropolitan Police are trialling additional tools, including:

  • AI systems to detect mobile phone use and seatbelt offences

  • Technology to identify illegal number plates

  • Enhanced roadside drug-testing equipment

Further safety camera locations are also planned, with at least 20 additional sites under consideration.

Police say the improved systems will help ensure offenders are identified more effectively, supporting efforts to reduce dangerous driving and improve safety across London’s roads.
