A large-scale sign cleaning programme aimed at improving road safety and enhancing local environments has resulted in nearly 16,000 road signs being cleaned across Lancashire.

Recent figures show that 15,909 signs have been refreshed so far, covering around 248 miles of key routes throughout the county.

The work has primarily focused on major A roads, where clear and visible signage is vital for driver awareness and safe navigation. Key routes such as the A59, A6, A580, A565 and A583 have all seen significant progress, with teams working methodically across urban, rural and coastal areas.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to improve civic pride across Lancashire, alongside other projects aimed at maintaining and enhancing public spaces. Previous work under this programme included supporting community groups and local councils in maintaining war memorials ahead of Remembrance Day.

Councillor Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said the programme highlights the importance of maintaining everyday infrastructure that people rely on.

He noted that well-maintained signage not only improves safety for drivers but also contributes to cleaner, more welcoming communities. The work, he added, is focused on delivering visible improvements that positively impact daily journeys.

The sign cleaning programme is ongoing and will continue in phases as part of the council’s wider highways maintenance efforts.
