Herefordshire Council has launched its ‘Back the Bypass’ campaign, bringing together local leaders, businesses and stakeholders to highlight the potential benefits of a long-planned bypass for the county.

At the heart of the campaign is a series of new films showcasing the impact of current congestion and illustrating how the proposed scheme could transform connectivity, economic growth and quality of life. The content also provides further detail on Phase One of the project, including environmental considerations and broader plans for the full route.

The initiative represents a coordinated effort to build momentum behind the scheme, which aims to address long-standing traffic issues in Hereford while supporting future development and investment.

The campaign follows the recent appointment of a contractor to progress detailed design and early-stage works for the first phase of the bypass.

Phase One will deliver a 3km single carriageway link connecting the A465 to the A49 on the south-western side of Hereford. The route will run between Grafton and the B4399, providing an alternative corridor intended to reduce traffic through residential areas in South Wye, including Belmont, Walnut Tree Avenue and Holme Lacy Road.

By linking key strategic routes, the first phase is expected to improve access to major employment areas such as the Hereford Enterprise Zone, while also enhancing east–west connectivity around the city.

Councillor Jonathan Lester, Leader of Herefordshire Council, said the campaign marks an important milestone: “This is a significant moment for Herefordshire as we move closer to delivering a long-awaited infrastructure project.

“The campaign is about securing the backing needed to unlock growth across the county. For years, congestion through Hereford has constrained development. The bypass has the potential to open up new opportunities for housing, employment and investment.

“I would encourage everyone who recognises the benefits of this scheme to support the campaign and help shape the county’s future.”
