Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has introduced a new Sustainability Academy for staff, marking Earth Day with a focus on embedding environmental responsibility across its operations.
The initiative is designed to support the company’s wider sustainability strategy, which aligns with the rail industry’s Sustainable Rail Blueprint and sets targets around emissions, environmental impact and social responsibility. GTR operates Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern and Gatwick Express services.
The first group of five employees—from roles including station management to engineering—has begun a two-year training programme. On completion, participants will gain a Level 4 qualification in Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, equivalent to the first year of a university degree.
Jason Brooker, GTR’s Head of Environment and Sustainability, said the academy aims to drive both practical change and a broader cultural shift within the organisation. He emphasised that sustainability must be integrated into everyday operations, from energy use and recycling to wider environmental targets.
The programme also highlights the importance of small, everyday actions, such as reducing unnecessary energy use and improving waste segregation, alongside larger initiatives to cut emissions and improve air quality.
One of the participants, Hannah Causebrook, is already contributing to GTR’s climate resilience planning, focusing on how extreme weather could impact stations, infrastructure and services. Her work includes identifying risks such as flooding and exploring ways to strengthen the network’s resilience.
Industry leaders have welcomed the move, describing it as a proactive step towards building in-house expertise and turning sustainability ambitions into practical outcomes. The academy is also being delivered in partnership with LDN Apprenticeships, supporting workforce development in this area.
GTR says the programme will play a key role in ensuring its sustainability goals are not only set but actively delivered across the business.
