Oxfordshire County Council has chosen Graham as the contractor for the Clifton Hampden Bypass, a key component of the wider Didcot and surrounding areas infrastructure programme.
This marks the second of three planned construction contracts for the overall scheme, which aims to improve transport links and ease traffic congestion in the region. The Clifton Hampden Bypass will divert traffic from the existing A415, routing it around the village to reduce pressure on local roads.
The project includes the construction of a new single carriageway connecting the A415 near Culham Science Centre to the B4015 Oxford Road, located north of Clifton Hampden. The design also incorporates dedicated, segregated paths for pedestrians and cyclists to encourage safer, more sustainable travel.
At the western end of the bypass, a new roundabout will provide access to both Culham Science Centre and Culham railway station. Additional junctions are planned east of the roundabout, linking to the current A415, as well as at the northeastern end of the new route.
Councillor Judy Roberts, cabinet member for infrastructure and development strategy at Oxfordshire County Council, highlighted the benefits of the scheme, noting that the A415 currently carries heavy traffic and experiences frequent congestion, particularly between the A415 and A4074. She added that the road passes directly through Clifton Hampden, including near the village primary school, and that the new bypass will significantly reduce traffic within the village by redirecting vehicles onto a purpose-built route to the north.
