Wiltshire Council has allocated £50,000 towards early-stage work on a proposed pedestrian and cycling bridge over the River Avon in Bradford on Avon, working in partnership with the town council.

The planned crossing would link Bridge Street on the southern side of the river with Bridge Yard to the north, offering a safer and quieter alternative to the existing Town Bridge, which is often busy with traffic.

The initial funding, provided through Active Travel England, will be used to develop design proposals and prepare an outline business case. This stage is intended to support future funding applications needed to deliver the full scheme.

The project is also included in Wiltshire Council’s draft four-year active travel programme, with further investment expected in the coming years. Funding for detailed design is anticipated in 2027/28, with construction funding provisionally planned for 2028/29 and 2029/30.

Councillor Martin Smith, cabinet member for highways, said the funding marks an important step towards improving walking and cycling routes in the town. He highlighted the council’s commitment to working with local communities to deliver safer and more accessible travel options.

Bradford on Avon’s Mayor, Councillor Jack Vittles, welcomed the progress, noting that the bridge has been a priority for the town council for several years. He said residents have consistently supported the proposal and emphasised the wider benefits it could bring.

These include improving safety for pedestrians, enhancing access across the town centre, and maintaining connectivity during periods of flooding when existing routes may be affected.

Both Wiltshire Council and Bradford on Avon Town Council have said they will continue to keep residents informed as the project develops.
