The Scottish Government has launched a new round of funding aimed at supporting projects that help improve road safety and reduce casualties across the country.

Administered by Transport Scotland, the Road Safety Framework Fund provides financial support to organisations developing initiatives that align with Scotland’s long-term strategy to make the nation’s roads safer. The programme forms part of the government’s wider ambition to significantly reduce road deaths and serious injuries by the end of the decade.

Organisations wishing to apply have until 4 May 2026 to submit proposals.

Who Can Apply

The funding programme is open to a range of organisations based in Scotland. Eligible applicants include public sector organisations, professional bodies, charities and academic institutions, particularly those with expertise in transport safety, research or public education.

The fund is designed to support projects that involve collaboration and partnership working, encouraging different sectors to come together to develop solutions that address key road safety challenges.

Focus on Education and Behaviour Change

Unlike many transport funding streams, this programme is not intended for infrastructure improvements. Instead, the funding is aimed at supporting initiatives that focus on training, education, research, awareness campaigns or behavioural change programmes.

Previous projects supported by the fund have targeted groups considered to be at higher risk on the roads, including:

  • Older motorists

  • Motorcyclists

  • Young and newly qualified drivers

  • Employees who drive as part of their work

By focusing on education and behavioural change rather than physical infrastructure, the programme aims to influence road user behaviour and reduce the likelihood of collisions.

Driving Progress Toward Safer Roads

Scotland’s Road Safety Framework to 2030 sets out the government’s long-term ambition to dramatically cut the number of serious injuries and fatalities on the country’s road network.

The funding programme plays a role in supporting organisations that can contribute new ideas, research or community-led initiatives to help achieve those targets.

Government Encourages Innovative Proposals

Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, said the programme reflects the government’s continued commitment to improving road safety and preventing avoidable tragedies.

She explained that the government is particularly interested in proposals that demonstrate fresh thinking and strong collaboration, as these can play a crucial role in addressing persistent road safety challenges.

Hyslop also emphasised that partnerships between organisations across the road safety sector can lead to more effective solutions, encouraging groups with innovative ideas to submit applications.

Supporting Safer Communities

Through the Road Safety Framework Fund, the Scottish Government hopes to support projects that will make a measurable difference in reducing risk on the road network.
