Doncaster Sheffield Airport Reopening Plans Reach Key Airspace Milestone

Plans to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport have taken an important step forward after new Airspace Change Proposal (ACP) documents were released by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Airport leaders say the publication of the latest documents marks a significant milestone in the process to bring the airport back into operation, as securing controlled airspace around the site will play a crucial role in attracting airlines and freight operators.

The newly released documentation outlines the results from the first two stages of the airspace change process, enabling the airport’s operator and its specialist consultants to refine their proposals. The next phase will involve a public consultation, allowing stakeholders and the community to provide feedback before plans progress further.

Controlled Airspace Critical to Airport Operations

According to airport operator FlyDoncaster, gaining dedicated controlled airspace is essential if the airport is to operate effectively and unlock its long-term potential.

Christian Foster, Director at FlyDoncaster, explained that having its own controlled airspace would provide the operational flexibility needed to attract airlines and cargo operators looking to establish services from the airport.

He added that engagement with a wide range of organisations—including statutory bodies and other aviation stakeholders—has already taken place as part of the early stages of the process.

Foster said the response so far has been encouraging, with several airport operators expressing support and wishing the project success. He noted that the positive feedback reflects both the collaborative nature of the aviation industry and recognition of the potential benefits that a reopened Doncaster Sheffield Airport could bring.

Preferred Airspace Option Identified

The latest documents also introduce a revised airspace design option, developed in response to feedback from regulators and stakeholders.

This new proposal, known as Option Three, reduces the volume of controlled airspace required—an important factor as the CAA requires airports to request only the minimum airspace necessary for safe and efficient operations.

FlyDoncaster has confirmed that this option will now be taken forward as the preferred proposal during the upcoming consultation stage.

Foster emphasised that the amount of controlled airspace requested does not limit the number of flights that could operate from the airport. Instead, operational capacity is determined by separate planning permissions.

Currently, planning policies allow for around 40,000 air traffic movements per year, which could support millions of passengers as well as substantial volumes of freight.

Building Momentum Behind the Project

Work to restore operations at the airport is continuing across several areas simultaneously.

Alongside the airspace certification process, recruitment has begun for a range of key roles. Around 40 positions have already been filled, with further hiring planned in the coming months. Airport leaders expect the workforce to grow to around 200 staff on site by the end of the year.

Infrastructure improvements are also underway. New fire training facilities have been installed to strengthen safety and emergency response capabilities.

Meanwhile, procurement processes are in progress for essential airport systems and equipment, including radar technology, air traffic control simulators and specialist fire service vehicles.

Confidence in Future Demand

Despite the scale of the project, airport leaders say discussions with aviation industry figures and potential airline partners are reinforcing confidence in the airport’s future prospects.

Foster described the reopening effort as an ambitious undertaking but said continued engagement with potential customers has revealed strong levels of interest in using the airport once it returns to operation.
