Consultation ending over trust-backed road plan

A consultation to discuss an upgrade to a road, backed by a hospital trust, is ending on Wednesday.

By upgrading the A46 around the Walsgrave junction in Coventry, National Highways said it would "unlock this congestion, improve journey reliability and support economic growth across the West Midlands".

The improvement work is predicted to cost £112.5m and will make access to University Hospital Coventry easier.

The trust said it had been "an aspiration of our hospital to have another access on to this site for a long, long time".

Chief executive officer Andy Hardy said: "The conversation we've had with [National Highways]... to date is that where their junction will be, there could be a junction directly into the rear of the hospital site.

"[That could be] specifically for [a] staff entrance, but also very importantly for ambulance access, which will take away from the congestion we see on a regular basis around Clifford Bridge Road." Mr Hardy added looking towards "south Warwickshire, the M6, M69 junctions", ambulances would be able to have quicker access on to the site.

The trust chief executive officer stated: "They need to get the right planning. There's... residential potential developments associated with it... we support all of that."
