Councillors in Milton Keynes have questioned the safety of a recently introduced traffic light-controlled roundabout following complaints from local residents, though highways officers maintain the design meets national standards.

The junction, located on Willen Road, has prompted feedback from drivers who say the layout is unclear, particularly around lane positioning. Some motorists have reported uncertainty when approaching the roundabout, with the right-hand lane appearing to lead straight on rather than clearly directing traffic towards Newport Pagnell.

Residents have also highlighted incidents where drivers have had to make last-minute lane changes, raising concerns about potential collisions and near misses.

Local councillors raised these issues with the council’s Highways team, requesting a review of the design and seeking reassurance on safety.

In response, highways officers confirmed that the roundabout has undergone multiple independent road safety audits and has been assessed by several engineers. They stated that the layout complies with current national guidance for modern junction design.

Officers explained that drivers should treat the right-hand lane as continuing around the roundabout, only moving into the left lane when preparing to exit. They also noted that differences between newer and older roundabout designs across the city may contribute to confusion among drivers.

Councillors said they had pressed the issue on behalf of residents and would continue to monitor the situation.

Councillor Jane Carr said that while the highways team is confident in the design, some drivers may need time to adapt to the new layout. She added that feedback from residents would continue to be passed on.

Councillor Andy Carr urged motorists to exercise caution when using the junction and encouraged residents to keep sharing their experiences so that any further concerns can be addressed.

The council has indicated it will keep the roundabout under review and consider further adjustments if necessary.
