The Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) is entering its final phase of construction, with Cumberland Council confirming that the major infrastructure project is close to being ready for public use.

Significant progress has been made in recent months, with key elements of the road now largely complete. Final surfacing has been laid, road markings are being added, and signage is being installed along the route.

Landscaping is also nearing completion, including tree planting and grass seeding across embankments and verges. Hydroseeding is currently being used to help establish vegetation quickly and effectively.

Distinctive sculptures celebrating the area’s rural heritage have been installed at key roundabouts, including the Mare and Foal at Durdar and the Limousin Bull at Brisco, created by local artist Ellie Barden.

The project has involved extensive engineering work, with more than one million cubic metres of material moved during construction. While most earthworks are finished, some activity is still ongoing, meaning the road remains closed to the public for safety reasons.

The scheme has now moved into the “snagging” stage, where detailed inspections are carried out and any final issues resolved. A full Road Safety Audit is also underway—an important step before opening.

Main contractor Galliford Try Infrastructure is preparing the route for launch, with an official opening ceremony scheduled for the morning of Friday 12 June. The road is expected to open to traffic later that day.

Cumberland Council has noted that although parts of the route are already in use by construction traffic, it remains an active work site, which is why traffic management measures such as cones and reduced speed limits are still in place.

Council leader Mark Fryer described the scheme as one of the most significant infrastructure investments in the area in recent years. He said the new road will improve connectivity, reduce congestion and support economic growth, while thanking local residents and businesses for their patience during construction.
