Plans have been unveiled to upgrade Brighton Railway Station and its surrounding area, as part of a wider effort to improve the city’s appeal for residents and tourists.

Brighton & Hove City Council is leading proposals to enhance the station entrance and nearby streets, aiming to create a cleaner, more welcoming gateway to one of the South East’s most visited destinations outside London.

The station area has faced ongoing issues with litter and antisocial behaviour, prompting councillors to prioritise improvements. The proposed measures include installing additional bins, applying anti-sticker coatings to surfaces, and increasing cleaning efforts to maintain a tidier environment.

Working in partnership with rail operators, including Southern and Network Rail, as well as local businesses along Queen’s Road, the council hopes the project will support the city’s visitor economy and improve first impressions for those arriving by train.

Initial steps are already underway, with teams recently removing large numbers of stickers from the station frontage and introducing new jet-washing equipment for deep cleaning across the city centre. Plans also include the installation of dozens of new communal bins to reduce littering.

Looking ahead, further enhancements could involve upgraded pavements and additional planting, such as hanging baskets, to improve the visual appeal of the area.

Council representatives have stressed the importance of creating a positive arrival experience, noting Brighton’s status as a major tourist destination. A newly appointed city centre manager will also work with local stakeholders to coordinate improvements and strengthen collaboration.

Rail operator Southern has welcomed the proposals, highlighting the station’s importance to the city’s tourism sector. Passenger numbers for leisure travel have already surpassed pre-pandemic levels, and the station has recently received industry recognition.

Network Rail and Southern have both confirmed they will work closely with the council and local partners to support the improvements, ensuring the station continues to serve as a fitting entrance to the city.
