With London’s local elections scheduled for 7 May and the pre-election period underway, Brent Cycling Campaign has launched its Streets for Cycling initiative, calling on future council leaders to prioritise the delivery of safer cycling infrastructure.
The campaign is urging candidates to commit to implementing a network of high-quality cycle routes already identified by Transport for London (TfL). These routes are considered key to increasing cycling uptake and come with potential funding, provided they meet TfL’s design standards.
Campaigners argue that progress in Brent has been limited, with few significant improvements since the introduction of protected cycle lanes on Carlton Vale nearly a decade ago. Several TfL-backed proposals—including routes linking Wembley to Willesden Junction and corridors running alongside the Jubilee line—have faced delays or have yet to deliver meaningful safety enhancements.
The group is calling for a clear commitment to creating a connected and accessible cycling network that supports everyday journeys across the borough.
Plans centre around six strategic routes identified by TfL, which together would form a core network linking key areas such as Harlesden, Kenton, Kilburn, Kingsbury, Wembley and Willesden. The proposed infrastructure would combine quieter, low-traffic streets with segregated cycle lanes on busier roads.
Brent Cycling Campaign says delivering this network could significantly increase cycling levels by making it a safer and more practical option for a wider range of residents, including children, older people and those with accessibility needs.
The group also highlights wider benefits, including improved public health through increased physical activity, reduced traffic congestion, enhanced road safety and lower levels of air pollution.
As the election approaches, the campaign is positioning cycling infrastructure as a key issue, urging incoming councillors to prioritise delivery and unlock the long-term benefits of a fully connected cycle network.
