Tram services in Birmingham are set to reach new destinations from Easter Sunday, as the first phase of a major network expansion comes into operation.
The West Midlands Metro extension to Millennium Point will introduce two additional stops, strengthening connections across the eastern part of the city centre.
The expanded route will improve access to key locations including Millennium Point, Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum, Birmingham City University and Moor Street Station. A new stop at Albert Street is also expected to enhance links for passengers using the nearby bus interchange.
This development forms part of a broader योजना to extend the Metro further east, with construction already underway on a future extension to Digbeth.
Looking ahead, longer-term ambitions include routes serving a proposed Birmingham City FC stadium and improved links to Birmingham Airport.
Transport for West Midlands representative Sandeep Shingadia said the extension would make it easier for people to reach employment, education and leisure opportunities, describing it as the start of a wider transformation of the city’s transport network.
Services along the new section are expected to operate every 15 minutes, with some existing trams rerouted to incorporate the additional stops.
Sophie Allison, managing director of West Midlands Metro, said the launch marks an important milestone for the system, bringing benefits to both passengers and local businesses.
Birmingham City Council added that the extension will improve connectivity to the Knowledge Quarter and help drive regeneration in the Eastside area.
